The countdown is on to the 2023 HM Awards, with nominations now open to determine the top properties, people and projects in the region.
HM caught up with The Rees Hotel Queenstown Executive Chef, Corey Hume, who has claimed the top award for Hotel Chef for the last three years running, to hear about his experience and advice for those entering.
Do you feel that the award helped raise your profile within the industry?
It definitely has helped me, I like to consistently show progression in my career, and it was very important for myself and my team directly. My chef colleagues were quick to congratulate me as they know how I work and the standards I hold myself too professionally.
Why should someone enter the award?
It’s a great form of recognition, and if you are travelling to Australia (a nod to my fellow Kiwis), it will help raise your profile. I really do find the industry recognition some of the best though, and the HM Awards is a great example of a collaborative effort and a wide range of recognition.
Any tips for those thinking of entering?
I see these types of awards as a form of recognition for the work you are already doing daily, at the level you are constantly trying to perform at. This is not recognition that is based on one day, rather over the past year. Consistency is key, achieving consistent results, and keeping a great attitude each day, no matter what comes your way.
Anything else you’d like to add?
I’m truly grateful to have been awarded Best Chef for three years running at the HM Awards whilst at The Rees Hotel Queenstown – during a global pandemic no less!
There are many deserving candidates every year, and I encourage you all to give your best every day, regardless of whether you are seeking recognition or not, but because it is the right thing to do.
Everything comes full circle eventually, so never give up, keep giving your best.
