Discover the stunning refurbishment of the iconic Ghan train by Woods Bagot, with Modieus supplying bespoke carpets. Blending heritage with modern luxury, the redesign enhances this legendary Australian rail journey.
A symbol of adventure and discovery, The Ghan is one of the world’s most iconic rail journeys, traversing 2,979 kilometers from Adelaide to Darwin. Named after Afghan camel drivers who helped explore Australia’s interior, this legendary train now boasts a refined new look, thanks to a thoughtful refurbishment by design studio Woods Bagot. Modieus enhance the onboard experience with luxury carpets in the cabins, lounges, and restaurants.
Sustainably minded, Woods Bagot deployed an inventive reuse of existing assets, alongside new materials selected for durability and longevity. Debra Ryan, Design Manager at Modieus explains the design brief, “Woods Bagot drew inspiration from several Indigenous artists. The interiors embody hues from the rich red earth and the vivid mountains beyond, incorporating colours of paper bark, gum trees, and the dusty soil. Our luxurious bespoke carpets capture this inspiration, enhancing the passenger experience as they journey through central Australia”.
The refurbishment extends beyond aesthetics, offering enhanced comfort and social spaces. The Outback Explorer Lounge and the newly designed Gold Premium Lounge provide inviting settings for relaxation and conversation, while the Queen Adelaide Restaurant serves seasonal cuisine crafted from locally sourced ingredients, paired with fine Australian wines.
Since its inaugural journey in 1929, The Ghan has embodied the romance of rail travel. The completion of its north-south transcontinental route in 2004 cemented its legacy. Today, this latest transformation ensures that The Ghan remains one of the world’s most extraordinary train journeys.
Modieus Founder Xander Okhuizen sums up, “The Ghan is the Orient Express of Australia, and we are honoured to be part of its story. It’s a unique way to see the vast Australian interior”.
