In one of New York’s most happening neighbourhoods is a property that offers style, location, cocktails and fantastic service, the Hotel AKA NoMad. James Wilkinson checks in and catches-up with Hotel AKA NoMad Managing Director, Elon Kenchington.

Elon, what makes Hotel AKA NoMad one of Midtown Manhattan’s best hotels?

As leaders in long stay living, AKA has successfully implemented its core residential philosophies to now evolve the hotel category into a high-quality experience that is more liveable. Aligning with our ‘World’s Most Liveable Hotels’ concept, there are many reasons why Hotel AKA NoMad continues to be a top choice for travelers visiting the Midtown NYC area.

Most notably, the hotel’s interiors are the work of globally renowned architect and designer Piero Lissoni, who has created a sophisticated, tranquil atmosphere in the NoMad neighborhood with one of his first-ever U.S. hotel projects. Situated in the heart of Manhattan’s vibrant design district, the hotel’s prime location also offers easy access to major attractions, shopping, dining, and entertainment options.

It is near iconic NYC landmarks like the Empire State Building, Madison Square Park and the Flatiron District. The hotel features elegantly designed guestrooms and suites with modern touches, and amenities such as a state-of-the-art Technogym fitness center, a.lounge + bar, business facilities and event spaces.

What makes the hotel so unique in your opinion?

The partnership AKA has cultivated with Piero Lissoni and his team has set us apart from other hotels in the area. Hotel AKA NoMad strikes the perfect balance between the privacy of a residence, and the hospitality and style of an intimate hotel.

The design elements draw on a range of influences from both Japan and Scandinavia, creating a serene and sophisticated ambiance amidst the bustle of New York City.

Whether guests choose a comfortable guest room or an expansive suite, each space exudes a serene, residential ambiance that invites relaxation and inspiration. Many of our specialty view suites offer views of the iconic Empire State Building from their upper-floor locations.

The decor is a testament to elegance, featuring furnishings by Living Divani, Porro Shin beds with custom padded headboards, and bathrooms adorned with exquisite ceramic tiles, limestone surfaces, and Fantini fixtures enhanced by Lualdi wood and door details. From enjoying morning espresso by large windows to unwinding with curated artworks by Scandinavian talents, these designer retreats offer a perfect blend of comfort and sophistication.

With select suites boasting private landscaped balconies, Hotel AKA NoMad ensures every stay has exclusive amenities and unparalleled views, creating an unforgettable experience in the heart of New York City.

We invite our guests to unwind in the sleek a.lounge+bar, a sophisticated retreat just off our lobby. Perfect for intimate evening gatherings or after-work cocktails, a.lounge+bar offers a curated selection of fine wines thoughtfully chosen by our sommelier and expertly crafted cocktails from our innovative mixologists.

Our daytime lunch menu includes charcuterie and fresh salads, while evenings feature a variety of small and large plates such as flatbreads and artisanal cheeses. All dishes are prepared with seasonal ingredients, catering to diverse and sophisticated palates.

Lissoni’s design continues in this space too, featuring plush seating, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking iconic Madison Avenue, a majestic Lissoni signature staircase, and a mesmerizing, fluted glass chandelier by Axon Lighting Design.

What’s your x-factor at the hotel?

The unique design elements found throughout Hotel AKA NoMad are truly a sight to be seen. My favorite spot at the property and one that continuously “wows” our guests, is the centerpiece of a.lounge+bar – a Lissoni-designed floating signature staircase.

As the focal point of the ground floor, the iconic floating structure in the center of the lobby features a bronze, metallic painted steel with Pietra d’Avola treads and is origami-like in shape.

The staircase also brings guests to the Mezzanine Lounge, a second-floor space boasting elegant seating nooks perfect for work, intimate conversations, or enjoying European-styled breakfast.

Another “x-factor” we’re proud of is AKA’s popular LIVE IT! Program, which provides our hotel guests with unique opportunities to pursue their passions during their stay.

Through this program, we work with hand-selected local partners that are experts in their field to help bring different programs to guests throughout the year, such as preparing the perfect chocolate and wine pairings.

Favourite things to do in the area?

I start off many of my days by enjoying an espresso and European-style breakfast right on sit eat Hotel AKA NoMad. I also enjoy taking scenic walks down Madison Avenue while window-shopping among the endless array of designer furniture boutiques, and then picking up a delicious salad at Slate Café and lunch in Madison Square Park, an iconic NYC destination and experience.

One of my favorite destinations is strolling through Eataly in Flatiron, which is an all-encompassing Italian experience and vibrant Italian marketplace.

Then, I typically head back up Madison Avenue leaving behind me the iconic landmarks of the Clocktower and Flatiron Building, then coming back into full view of the Empire State building as I make my way back to the hotel.

Other favorite weekday experiences include visiting the Fotografiska Museum on Park Avenue, as well as popping into NeueHouse. Some favorite local restaurants include Her Name is Han, NONONO, and Cote (to name a few). There a few speakeasy cocktail lounges that are must finds – Osamil and Bronze Owl.

On weekends, there’s no better experience than taking a stroll to Hudson Yards, heading up to the top of the “Edge” to experience the best skyline views of Manhattan and the five boroughs – it is truly breathtaking.

I’ll then follow this up with a walk down the Highline, where one will discover an array of art galleries, retails stores, and coffee shops – with a must-stop spot for brunch at Cookshop or Little Mermaid Inn (depending on your preference for Farm to Table or Seafood cuisine.

Cookshop has hands-down the best Bloody Mary in the big Apple. Also on weekends, I love grabbing tickets to a game at Madison Square Garden or having a jazz evening with dinner at the Flatiron Room.
